The wage gap among genders has consistently been an issue in the United States, with women unfairly being paid less than their male counterparts. However, this issue has become even more prominent with the election of President Donald Trump.
The president and other conservatives have neglected or straight out opposed policies that would help close this pay gap and ensure that all individuals be paid the same regardless of their gender. This has caused many women as well as men to protest and fight for equal rights.
One Utah Republican in particular spoke out to say that women should not be paid the same as men because it would ruin the traditional family dynamic.
James Green, former vice chair of the Wasatch County Republican Party, argued in a letter that women should not be paid the same as men because it would hurt the economy and dismantle families in the U.S.
In the letter, published by two local publications, Green explains that, “If businesses are forced to pay women the same as male earnings, that means they will have to reduce the pay for the men they employ, simple economics.”
Green goes on to say that men will have trouble earning enough money to provide for their families forcing their wives to work and leave the home, where they belong.
His argument all stems back to the idea that if women were to be paid the same as men it would be detrimental to the economy. However his argument is assuming that every individual in the United States is part of the traditional family dynamic that requires the mom to stay at home and raise the kids while the dad goes to work to support the family.
Green’s argument is not only wrong, it is painfully outdated and sexist.
Society has come a long way and the traditional family dynamic that Green talks about is not common anymore. More and more mothers have careers and provide for their families. Fathers are now choosing to stay home to raise their children as well.
Green also neglects the fact that many women are single mothers who have to go to work in order to support their families. It is extremely unfair to pay them less than a man for doing the same line of work.
Green has to face facts. It’s 2017; women are working full time jobs and doing just as well in them as their male counterparts. It’s time women have equal pay for equal work.
